Helen Henshaw Scholarship

The Monday Musical Club has been engaged in assisting young musicians in their
pursuit of musical study through the scholarship fund. Over the years, donations
collected at concerts, sent in honor or memory of club members, etc. have been
disbursed to students who applied and competed for scholarships.

The Young Musicians’ Forum was sponsored by Monday Musical Club for
approximately a decade in the 1980s. The scholarship program drew its honorees
from that group during that time. Many of the members also belonged to the
Empire State Youth Orchestra. When YMF was discontinued, MMC continued to
support ESYO through annual grants when funds were available.

Helen Henshaw was a distinguished organist, choir director, MMC member, and
ardent supporter of music study.During her lifetime, she administered the
scholarship program for MMC. Her legacy continues to support her life work, as
MMC received a generous bequest from her estate for scholarships. MMC honored
this bequest by naming the fund the Helen Henshaw Scholarship Fund.

In celebration of the centennial year, MMC honored twelve Centennial Scholars.
President Agnes Armstrong administered the special program which selected the
high school students from all over the Capital District, with talents in voice a
various instruments. The candidates were required to be pursuing a music or music
education major in college, and submitted essays and recorded auditions. Each
scholar received $1000. Many have returned to perform at concerts or other MMC
events.

MMC continues to honor deserving young musicians with grants toward their music
education. This year the award amount will be $400.
